Today I received notice that Amazon’s new Kindle 3 was available for pre-order. The ship date appears to be August 27th. Of course, I went ahead and pre-ordered it. I currently have a Kindle 2 and am looking forward to comparing the two devices in person.

The Kindle 3′s upgrades and new features are listed by Amazon as:

  • Two colors – white and graphite.
  • Better e-ink screen with higher contrast and no glare.
  • Improved fonts – two new font faces available and all fonts are crisper and darker.
  • Smaller and lighter – 21% smaller body with same 6″ screen, 17% lighter at 8.5 ounces
  • Better battery life – up to a month with wireless off, up to three weeks with wireless on (Wi-Fi only model) and seven days (Wi-Fi + 3G).
  • More storage – up to 3,500 books.
  • Built in Wi-Fi.
  • Faster page turns and quieter page turn buttons.
  • Enhanced PDF reader.
  • Twitter and Facebook integration built in – share passages with others

The Kindle 3 can be purchased in two configurations – one is Wi-Fi only and the other is 3G + WiFi. The Wi-Fi only is cheaper at $139 and the 3G + WiFi is $189, same as the Kindle 2. You can pre-order the Kindle 3 now, to be shipped on Aug 27th.

You can read more about the Kindle 3 on Amazon’s website.
